Horse & Rider Training

John and Wendy have been very successful in their training programs for all breeds. Wendy is a favorite of ours especially with women. Whether it is halter breaking a weanling, preparing halter horses for competitions, starting a two-year old under saddle, tuning up an older horse or fixing a problem horse – their program is taught with patience, kindness, and firmness. Butternut Stables offers training from unbroken two-year olds to finished show horses that are ready to compete in English and Western events.

The Boarding

The clean, well-lit barn (32′ x 150′) is the ideal location to board your horse. All 30 box stalls have sliding windows for proper ventilation. The horses are fed three times each day and are turned out daily in individual pens. The barn is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The adjoining arena has a heated viewing room.

Three sand outdoor arenas, a round pen, and nine outdoor paddocks are available for use by Butternut’s customers.

The Showing

Butternut Stables takes its horse trailers to twenty-plus Quarter Horse shows in New England, Quebec, and the Maritimes.
We can truck your horse if you don’t have a trailer. We can also provide coaching at the shows. We will ensure that your show goes smoothly from entry forms to stalls, and teach you to be competitive in the show ring. Classes are available for novice youth and amateurs as well as regular youth, amateur, and open classes. Even if you are a novice rider there is a place for you to show.

The Lessons

Both English & Western lessons are taught in private, semi-private, and group sessions. Butternut has well-schooled retired show horses to use for lessons – or use your own horse. Their lessons are aimed at teaching the proper way to groom, tack up, and ride. These lessons emphasize safety around your horse.

The program can take a beginner as far as he or she wants to go…competing at local or even national shows. Over night & Day camps are available for students during the summer.
